Highways and roads around Edina's sprawling medical and retail center were closed and a hospital locked down Monday night after a man was shot in its parking area.

City officials urged those living nearby to remain in their homes as police searched for the suspect.

Edina police responded to reports of a shooting outside the M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital at 6401 S. France Av. just before 9 p.m., according to the city.

A source who saw the incident report told the Star Tribune that the victim is a doctor who was being robbed at gunpoint and was shot when he resisted.

The doctor was shot in the head and was able to describe the suspect, the source said.

The victim suffered noncritical injuries and was receiving medical treatment. His identity has yet to be released. A city official said he is 45 years old and lives in Eagan.

The hospital is at France Avenue and Crosstown Hwy. 62, both of which were reported to be closed. Helicopters could be heard circling the area, which has a park and homes nearby.

The shooting occurred on the B level of a parking ramp, according to emergency dispatch audio.

WCCO-TV reported that officers assembled in the Southdale Center parking lot across from the hospital.

Police described the suspect as an Asian man in his 30s with shaved hair and a tattoo on the right side of his neck. The suspect was wearing sweatpants.

Staff writers Rochelle Olson and Paul Walsh contributed to this report.
