An Edina man was sentenced Friday to 3 1/2 years in prison for driving drunk and killing a husband and father who was riding a motor scooter.

Christian Neal Rogat, 41, pleaded guilty to four counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the Sept. 1 death of moped rider Robert "Bob" Kuntze, 53, of Edina.

Rogat admitted being at the wheel of an SUV when it struck Kuntze at Vernon Avenue and Hansen Road. Rogat then fled. Police found the SUV in a driveway on Hansen Road. Rogat, who was sitting on some steps, acknowledged hitting someone and said, "I freaked out and left."

His blood alcohol level was 0.165 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

Prosecutors wanted a four-year sentence, but Hennepin County District Judge Mark Wernick took into account Rogat's reduced mental capacity; he has an IQ of 71.

Kuntze is survived by his wife, June, and their son Ryan, 22.
