Edina High School Principal Bruce Locklear has announced plans to retire by the end of the school year.

In a letter to families, Locklear thanked the Edina community for supporting him during his 10 years leading the high school.

" I am ready to graduate with the class of 2017 and plan for what is next," Locklear said in the letter. " I truly believe that with a new superintendent coming on board and a new school configuration, it is a good time to announce my retirement."

Locklear leaves during a time of change for the high school as ninth grade transitions to the school and construction is completed.

During his time at the school, Locklear took on professional development and changing demographics in the district.

"The EHS community challenged me to do more, and so together we soldiered on and I am proud of all that we have accomplished," he said.

The school board will vote on Locklear's retirement at their meeting on Jan. 30.
