Eden Prairie falls in Legion regional final

Eden Prairie ran into strong pitching, ending its American Legion season and its hopes of repeating as the national champion.

McLaine Jonas gave up four hits in 6 2/3 innings, pitching Omaha to a 6-1 victory over Eden Prairie on Monday afternoon in the championship game of the Central Plains Regional in Dickinson, N.D. He struck out six and walked three, after getting a save by pitching the final 1 2/3 innings of Omaha's victory over Dickinson in the championship play-in game.

Eden Prairie had won the 2010 and 2011 Central Plains Regionals with a combined 11-1 record.

Eden Prairie used four pitchers, with starter Kent Curran going three innings and getting the loss.

Omaha won its way out of the consolation round after a 9-7 loss to Eden Prairie on Friday night.

U adds wrestlers The Gophers added five wrestlers during the late signing period, coach J Robinson announced.

Jordan Bremer of Moville, Iowa, was a four-time state qualifier and is expected to compete in the 125-pound weight class. Riley Prentice won 32 matches at 160 pounds during his senior season in Tumwater, Wash., and won 131 matches in his high school career.

Etc. • Kyle Ruwe pitched a complete game, giving up four hits in the St. Paul Saints' 5-1 victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats in Midway Stadium. Ruwe retired the final 16 batters. The only batter to reach base after the third inning was hit with a pitch.

• The Gophers volleyball team is ranked 16th in the preseason poll by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

• Minnesota Duluth is ranked second in the American Football Coaches Association Division II coaches poll, receiving five first-place votes and 661 points. St. Cloud State is ranked 16th with 266 points.

• The National Lacrosse League draft will be Oct. 1 in Toronto, the league announced. The Minnesota Swarm has four first-round picks, Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 10.
