Well, this should make for a very awkward tour for Van Halen this summer.
Guitarist Eddie Van Halen added another chapter to the legendary legacy of tension between himself and Van Halen frontman, David Lee Roth, in a new interview with Billboard, basically calling Roth a victim of arrested development who’s not on the same musical page as the rest of the group.
“How can I put this: Roth’s perception of himself is different than who he is in reality,” Van Halen opined. “We’re not in our 20s anymore. We’re in our 60s. Act like you’re 60. I stopped coloring my hair, because I know I’m not going to be young again.”
Even worse, Van Halen told Klosterman, the musical differences between Roth and the rest of the band could be preventing the group from heading into the studio to make another album.
“It’s hard, because there are four people in this band, and three of us like rock’n’roll. And one of us likes dance music,” Van Halen told Billboard. “And that used to kind of work, but now Dave doesn’t want to come to the table.
“He does not want to be my friend,” Van Halen said of Roth, who’s been in and out of the band on multiple occasions during the group’s decades-long career.
And while he was at it, Van Halen threw some shade toward longtime bassist Michael Anthony, who parted ways with the band in 2006 and was replaced by Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang.
To hear Van Halen tell it, Michael Anthony was so inept that Van Halen had to show him how to play his bass parts and really wasn’t much of a singer.
“Every note Mike ever played, I had to show him how to play,” the guitarist said. “Before we’d go on tour, he’d come over with a video camera and I’d have to show him how to play all the parts.”
As far as Anthony’s vocals go, Van Halen assessed, “Mike’s voice is like a piccolo trumpet. But he’s not a singer. He just has a range from hell … I have more soul as a singer than he does. And you know, people always talk about Mike’s voice on Van Halen songs, but that’s a blend of Mike’s voice and my voice. It’s not just him.”
It’s a wonder Van Halen gets any singing done at all, between all the trash-talking about his colleagues.
