A Woodbury teenager injured in a two-vehicle crash in Afton earlier this week has died, school authorities said.
Braedon Hyland's death was confirmed Friday afternoon, said Barb Brown, communications director for South Washington County Schools.
"He is recognized for his enthusiasm and great sense of humor," said a statement issued by the school district. "Staff at East Ridge said he was a great friend to many, transcending many student groups."
Hyland, 18, participated in hockey, football, soccer and track and field at East Ridge High School. A memorial service will be held Monday at 6 p.m. in the school's "Perch" Gymnasium. Although confirmation of his death came after school was dismissed, crisis teams were available all day Friday, Brown said.
The driver of the car that Hyland was riding in, Blake Sowle, 17, of Woodbury, remained in critical condition Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Hyland was a senior at East Ridge. His football team had a game scheduled for Friday night at Park of Cottage Grove. Brown said that representatives from Hyland's family and church planned to be available to speak to students.
The collision between Sowle's car and a pickup truck occurred about 7:30 p.m. Monday at Neal Avenue S. and 15th Street S., the Sheriff's Office said. Officials have not revealed details of the crash.
Treated for non-life threatening injuries at a Stillwater hospital were the pickup driver, Benjamin Lower, 36, of Lakeland, a 6-year-old girl and two 3-year-old girls in the pickup, the Sheriff's Office said. The girls were in child safety seats, deputies said.
