OAKDALE

Buyers, sellers sought for indoor garage sale Out with the old, in with the new-to-you.

The city is hosting an indoor garage sale on Feb. 7 for residents to buy or sell household items.

Sign-up deadline is Jan. 31, and there's a two-table maximum per family.

It costs $20 to sell and nothing to browse.

The garage sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Oakdale Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Av. N.

Sellers must register with the city's park and recreation department. Registration forms may be submitted online at www.ci.oakdale.mn.us or in person at the Oakdale Discover Center. Sellers may also fax their registration forms to the center at 651-747-3861.

STILLWATER

Vice-mayor chosen; 2 new members aboard The Stillwater City Council chose Mike Polehna as vice-mayor last week.

Meeting for the first time in 2009, the council also welcomed two new members -- Micky Cook and Jim Roush.

City leaders also thanked outgoing members Adam Nyberg and Wally Milbrandt for their years of service.

ROSEVILLE

Winter Jazz Blast features all ages The Roseville Winter Jazz Blast, a day-long event featuring high school, college and other jazz ensembles, will take place Saturday. The concerts will be held at Maranatha Hall at Northwestern College, 3003 Snelling Av. N., Roseville.

The Jazz Blast begins at 8:25 a.m. with performances by area high school and middle school bands. It ends with a 7:30 p.m. performance by the Roseville High School Jazz Band, the Northwestern College Jazz Ensemble, and the JazzMN Big Band.

The daytime performances are free, while the evening performances cost $17 for the general public; $9 for senior citizens and $7 for students. For more information call 651 631-5151 or go www.nwc.edu.

WOODBURY

New traffic signals going up at I-94 ramp The installation of the permanent traffic signal system at the intersection of Radio Drive and the new I-94 eastbound on-ramp has begun and is expected to take approximately three weeks.

The project includes raising and setting the new signal poles and mast arms, and final connections and testing. When the permanent signal system is ready for activation, the temporary signal system will be taken down and the switch will occur.

There will be some minor traffic impacts and lane closures for the first two weeks. Major delays are expected during the third week when the switch is made from temporary to permanent traffic signals, as the intersection will operate under all-way stop control.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Membership drive is part of 75th birthday The Washington County Historical Society (WCHS), one of the oldest heritage organizations in Minnesota, is turning 75 this year.

In conjunction with this milestone, the society has announced that its launching a major membership drive in 2009.

Individual memberships are $15 annually, $10 for students and seniors. Family memberships are now $25.

Members receive a subscription to Historical Whisperings, the society's quarterly journal; free admission to the WCHS museums; a 10 percent discount on local history books and other items at the WCHS Store; and free access to the society's historical collection of family histories, photographs, textiles, and county and community records.

Budget for 2009 available online The county's "Report to Our Citizens," which includes tables and charts showing revenue and expenses for the 2008 and 2009 budget years, is available on the county's website at www.co.washington.mn.us.

Washington County, one of Minnesota's original nine counties, was created in 1849. The county is expected to grow to 366,000 residents by 2030. The website also includes a forecast of the county's economic trends.

RAMSEY COUNTY

Kleinschmidt named county manager The Ramsey County Board unanimously approved the appointment of Julie Kleinschmidt as county manager during its Jan. 6 meeting.

Kleinschmidt, who had been the county's finance director, replaces David Twa, who left in September to become the county administrator in Contra Costa, Calif.

Commissioners selected her from a pool of seven finalists. She has worked for the county since 2000 and is the first woman to take over as Ramsey County's top administrator.

Kleinschmidt's base salary is $157,542.

Also during the meeting, Jan Parker was reelected as chairwoman of the board.

WHITE BEAR LAKE

Century College to hold 20th jazz festival Century College will host its 20th annual jazz festival the weekend of Jan. 24-25 in the West Campus Theatre. Featured guest is jazz trumpeter Bob Summers, who will perform with the 17-piece Century Jazz Ensemble Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday 3 p.m.

Summers, who has performed with such greats as Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson and Count Basie, currently works in Los Angeles with bands such as Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and the Bill Holman Band.

On both days, receptions with complimentary wine, cheese and dessert will precede the concerts. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $10 for students. For more information, call 651-779-3942.

ST. PAUL

Get educated about STAR program A workshop will be held Jan. 20 to help applicants for St. Paul's 2009 neighborhood Sales Tax Revitalization Program, or STAR.

Nonprofit and public entities are encouraged to apply for loans and/or grants between $5,000 and $25,000. For-profit businesses may also submit requests between $5,000 and $25,000 as long as the grant portion is equal to or less than the requested loan amount.

Money for the program comes from the city's half-cent sales tax. The funds are for capital projects to enhance economic, commercial or residential development and must be matched, dollar for dollar, by private money.

The workshop will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Dale Recreation Center, 1414 St. Albans St.

STAR applications are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 19 and will be reviewed by the neighborhood STAR board in March.
