A 7.0-magnitude earthquake rattled the Indonesian island of Java Wednesday,triggering a landslide and killing at least 44 people.According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit shortly before3 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located offshore about 120 miles southwestof the capital city Jakarta, and the center was located about 31 miles deep inthe ocean.
CNN reports that a landslide was triggered during the tremor, and at least 44people were killed, with more than 400 people injured.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon for Indonesia. The archipelagonation is located within the "Ring of Fire," a circle of connecting fault linesthat outline nearly the entire Pacific Ocean and is responsible for the highfrequency of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
