E. coli levels close Lake Independence beaches

July 31, 2014 at 2:49AM

Beaches on opposite ends of Lake Independence were closed Wednesday due to high E. coli counts.

At Baker Park Reserve, both the main beach and campground beach on the lake's southern edge were closed, according to Hennepin County. To the north, two beaches at YMCA Camp Ihduhapi also were closed.

Hennepin County recommends beach closures when E. coli levels exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Lakes are tested regularly for the organism, which signals an increased risk of waterborne illness.

Last week, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board closed Thomas Beach on Lake Calhoun after a weekly test showed E. coli levels exceeding state guidelines. E. coli levels — after a test performed on Monday — were low enough for the beach to reopen, according to the Park Board.
