Duluth officer hurt when car is struck by red-light runner

March 16, 2011 at 1:16AM

A repeat drunken driver ran a red light in Duluth and hit an unmarked squad car, putting a police investigator in the hospital, authorities said.

The crash happened about 6:20 a.m. Monday on Central Entrance, according to police.

The driver charged with running the light was identified as Duane Porter, 25, of Bemidji, Minn. He and the investigator, Sgt. Don Boso, were both taken to St. Luke's hospital, police said. Porter was treated and released; Boso, 50, remained in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Porter was booked into St. Louis County jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation, third-degree drunken driving, driving after license suspension, not heeding a red light, not wearing a seat belt and driving over the center line.

Porter's criminal history in Minnesota includes convictions for careless driving and underage drinking and driving in 2005, and drunken driving and an open-bottle violation in 2007.
