Duluth mother holds 3-year-old boy over edge of bridge

A 36-year-old woman held her 3-year-old boy over the edge of a bridge connecting Duluth and Superior, Wis., prompting the span's closure until officers brought them to safety, police said Monday.

The incident occurred about 12:20 a.m. Sunday on the Wisconsin side of the Blatnik Bridge, which carries Interstate 535 and U.S. Hwy. 53.

The Duluth woman was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth for a mental health evaluation, Superior police said. The child was released to a grandparent.

When officers responded to a witness' call to 911, the woman was in her car and stopped in a Superior-bound lane of the bridge, and her son was in the backseat.

The 1.5-mile-long bridge, which rises up to 120 feet over St. Louis Bay, was closed to traffic until the woman, her child and the car were brought off safely and without incident.
