An 8-year-old boy died after being pulled from the water Thursday during a field trip to a beach in Maple Plain.

Karmon Conneh, of Brooklyn Center, was at the south beach swimming area of Lake Independence at Baker Park Reserve, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

A teacher found the boy in about three feet of water Thursday afternoon and called 911, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. The office said their water patrol deputies and police and fire agencies responded.

“This is a parent’s nightmare, and our hearts are breaking for the family, as well as the teachers and kids who were on the field trip,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “This hits close to home for many of us, and we are keeping the child, their loved ones, and everyone impacted in our thoughts.”

Conneh died Friday at Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis of complications stemming from freshwater drowning, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

The boy was on a “supervised field trip.” The group leading the trip has not been identified.

The Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the incident.
