A motorist sitting at a red light at a northwest metro intersection was struck broadside by a car and killed Thursday morning, authorities said.

The crash about 9:45 a.m. in Zimmerman at Hwy. 169 and Fremont Avenue left 59-year-old Brian M. Doelz, of Elk River, dead, according to the State Patrol.

The other driver, RuthAnn K. Heinzen, 52, of Zimmerman, was hospitalized in Princeton with serious injuries, the patrol said.

The car driven by the man from Elk River was stopped on northbound Hwy. 169 at the red light, when the woman's eastbound car "veered to the south as she came through the intersection" on Fremont and struck the man's car at the driver's side door, said patrol Lt. Tiffani Schweigart.

The man died at the scene, the lieutenant said.
