A speeding motorist with a history of driving drunk drove through a roundabout while fleeing St. Cloud police, crashed and was killed, officials said Tuesday.

The incident unfolded about 10:40 p.m. Monday and ended moments later with a wreck at the intersection of University Drive S. and 5th Avenue S., a police statement read.

The State Patrol identified the driver as Mohamud Mahamad Yusuf, 41, of St. Cloud.

According to police and the patrol:

An officer on patrol on University near Killian Boulevard saw a car heading west and captured it on radar going 62 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone.

The officer attempted to stop the car, but Yusuf accelerated. The officer pursued as the driver crossed the University Bridge over the Mississippi River.

At the end of the bridge, Yusuf crossed into the eastbound lane, “at which point the officer immediately attempted to terminate the pursuit,” the statement read.

Yusuf drove through the roundabout at 5th Avenue S., hit a parked pickup truck and an apartment building light pole at the southwest corner of the intersection. The pickup driver, 53-year-old Mark Keith Weber, of St. Cloud,, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Emergency medical responders came to Yusuf’s aid, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Police said they are looking into why Yusuf fled from the officer but noted that his driving privileges were taken away by the state for “past driving conduct.”

Court records in Minnesota show Yusuf has five convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol and four for various times driving without being properly licensed.
