A 58-year-old man from Pillager, Minn., was killed in a vehicle accident late Thursday afternoon when his car hit a pickup head-on as he tried to pass another car, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

Randy Lee Karppinen was driving his 2004 Chevrolet Impala west on Hwy. 210 east of Pillager, near Brainerd, when he passed a 1999 Buick Park Avenue headed the same direction.

As Karppinen was passing the Buick just after 3 p.m., his car struck a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup that was headed east. He was fatally injured.

The State Patrol said roads were wet at the time of the crash. Karppinen was wearing a seat belt.

Authorities do not yet know if alcohol played a factor in the accident.

The driver of the pickup, 18-year-old Darion Preston Anderson, of Cross Lake, Minn., was taken to a hospital with noncritical injuries.

The people in the Buick, driver Christopher David Cherne, 17; Emily Clair Cherne, 14, and Jordan Daniel Cherne, 10, all of Pillager, were not harmed, the patrol said.

The patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

Pillager is in Cass County, in north-central Minnesota.
