A driver who fled after fatally striking a man attending a party in a southern Minnesota pasture has surrendered and awaits felony prosecution, authorities said Monday.

The suspect, a 26-year-old man from Austin, Minn., remains jailed Monday on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide stemming from the death Saturday of Alex D. Tapp, 30, also of Austin.

Tapp was hit while attending a party in a pasture behind a home about 7 miles west of Austin, when an SUV hit him about 9 p.m., according to the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office.

Some among the eight or so others at the gathering at 23595 890th Avenue began resuscitation efforts on Tapp before deputies arrived and continued lifesaving efforts, the Sheriff's Office continued. Tapp died at the scene.

The SUV driver fled, then turned himself in late Sunday afternoon at the County Law Enforcement Center in Albert Lea, the Sheriff's Office said.

A court official said the driver will be charged Tuesday ahead of a late-morning hearing.
