Driver identified in fatal head-on crash

A man from Grand Rapids, Minn., was identified Monday as the driver of a subcompact car who died after crossing into oncoming traffic in northern Minnesota and hitting a Cadillac head-on.

John T. Hohlen was killed in the collision shortly before noon Sunday on Hwy. 169 on the southern edge of Hill City.

Alcohol use by Hohlen was detected, according to the State Patrol.

A husband and wife in the Cadillac were both injured and hospitalized in Duluth. Daniel Mattfield, 58, of Grand Rapids was in critical condition. The patrol did not have a condition on Janine Mattfield, 46.
