A car fatally struck a motorist standing on a highway shoulder next to a trailer being pulled by his SUV in southeastern Minnesota, authorities said Friday.

The crash occurred about 7:50 p.m. Thursday on Hwy. 52 near Oronoco, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The victim was 65-year-old Mican N. Thach, of Rochester, the patrol said. His son, Chantha Thach, 39, was a passenger in the SUV and escaped injury.

Mican Thach parked his SUV and trailer on the left shoulder of northbound Hwy. 52 and exited his vehicle, the patrol said. The car sideswiped the trailer and hit Thach.

No details were given on what prompted Mican Thach to pull over and get out of his vehicle.

The car's driver, 52-year-old Todd S. Fierro, of St. Paul, was not injured.
