A driver died after losing control of his car on an east metro highway late at night and hitting a tree, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash occurred shortly before midnight Tuesday in Grant on westbound Dellwood Road, also known as Hwy. 96, at Kimbro Avenue N., just east of the Gateway State Trail and Lake Masterman.

The driver was identified as John W. Schmidt, 24, of North St. Paul. Schmidt went around a curve and into the oncoming lane, overcorrected and entered a ditch, sliding sideways and rolling before striking a tree, the patrol said.
