A 53-year-old woman died Monday morning after she hit a tow truck that had stopped on Interstate 494 in South St. Paul to attend to a previous crash, the State Patrol said.

The patrol identified the woman as Lynn Stackpole, of Woodbury.

According to the patrol, a tow truck responding to a one-vehicle crash stopped on the left shoulder of westbound I-494 near Hardman Avenue around 5:50 a.m. Stackpole rear-ended the tow truck.

Stackpole, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, the patrol said.

The tow truck driver, identified as James Bennett, 51, of South St. Paul, was not hurt.

Roads were icy at the time of the crash.

Also on Monday, a 43-year-old Brainerd man died in a head-on crash near Malmo, Minn., in Aitkin County.

Jeremy Padgette was driving east on an icy Hwy. 18 at 10:05 a.m. when he went across the centerline and collided with a westbound pickup truck, the patrol said.

Padgette died at the scene. The pickup truck driver, Shawn Philipp, 22, of Aitkin, was not hurt.
