Driver, 27, killed in broadside crash in south Minneapolis
It happened near the E. 35th Street entrance to Interstate 35W.
The man, in a blue sport utility vehicle, was heading north on 2nd Avenue S. when he raced through the stoplight, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said. The man struck another SUV coming into the intersection, which was headed west on E. 35th Street, sending it into the sound wall.
The northbound driver's SUV flipped on its side, partially ejecting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Air bags deployed, but he was not wearing his seat belt, police said.
"Likely had he been secured, he probably would have lived," Elder said of the dead man, whose name has not been released. The Hennepin County medical examiner's office will release his identity, along with the nature and cause of death.
The other driver was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. Authorities said he was wearing his seat belt.
