Korcula, Croatia (The Minnesota Star Tribune)

The Traveler: Gary Alan Raymond of Minneapolis.

The scene: The worn buildings of old town in Korcula, Croatia, spread out from the popular rooftop Massimo Cocktail Bar. The town, on its namesake island in the Adriatic Sea, is known for the medieval towers and walls along its harbor.

The destination: The bar sits atop the Zakerjan Tower, an overlook that is part of the town's fortress walls. "A very narrow and steep ship's ladder brings you up to the top through a small trap door. The bar was packed full of guests with little room to stand. I snapped the photo very quickly," Raymond wrote in an e-mail.

About Croatia: "Croatia is a beautiful country dotted with more than a thousand islands along the Adriatic Sea. Cruising is the best way to experience the many ancient cities found along the coast, from Dubrovnik in the south to Krk in the north," Raymond wrote. For more information, go to croatia.hr/en-GB, the website of Croatia's national tourism board.

The equipment: Raymond used his Samsung Galaxy smartphone to get this shot.
