Douglas: Warmer air coming, but little snowfall

MSP has seen only five days this winter with an inch or more of snow.

It’s a low bar, but my life goal is to ski Little Rock. As in Arkansas. You see, Little Rock has picked up more snow in a single day this winter (6.7 inches on Jan. 25) than the Twin Cities (where the heaviest single-day snowfall was 4.7 inches on Nov. 30). That’s just wrong.

For those of us keeping score, MSP has only seen five days this entire winter with an inch or more snow. Looking at climate data (1991 to 2020), we should have experienced nine or 10 days of inch-plus snowfall. How many ways can Paul remind us we’re in yet another snow drought?

If I could conjure up a winter with only 20s and a foot of snow every other week, I would. But I can’t. For that, I would require a much bigger Doppler.

Models hint at accumulating snow next Thursday, and as things warm up and the storm track shifts north again, we could, in theory, see more slushy encounters. That said, I’m keeping my flaky expectations low.

I see eight or nine days at or above freezing during the next 15 days — even a shot at 40. Not quite March weather, but close.

My personal advice: Play in the snow soon.
