A few friends are trying to persuade me to retire to Florida or Arizona. Tempting (in February), but I’m allergic to hurricanes, debilitating heat and earthquakes. Minnesota is home, and I will enjoy all four seasons as long as I can.
But every now and then I have a rare “where am I living?” moment. Mark Seeley’s latest Minnesota Weathertalk post includes this jaw-dropping nugget: “August 8th is the only historical date during the month that Minnesota has never reported a frost. All other days of the month have brought at least one frost to parts of northern Minnesota going all the way back to the 1880s.” August? A close call, but I’ll still take frost over a 400-mile-wide 150 mph hurricane.
Sunshine lingers Sunday with a good shot at mid-80s. Big weather disclaimer: Winds wrapping around a storm may drag another surge of thick Canadian wildfire smoke into Minnesota. Air quality alerts are in effect until Tuesday morning.
But no frost, storms-with-names, sharks or volcanic eruptions. That’s a big win.
