I’m praying for many things, among them snow. Not because I like sketchy commutes, but we need the moisture — to replenish lakes and rivers and give farmers a fighting chance for record yields in 2026.
Over 60% of Minnesota is still too dry; 36% of the state is in moderate to severe drought. A few big southern storms brimming with Gulf moisture would help, but I don’t see that scenario looking out two weeks. Beyond that? We’ll see.
Last month Marianna, Fla., saw more snow (1.3 inches) than Salt Lake City (1/10th of an inch). The western U.S. has seen record warmth and drought, which bodes poorly for not only skiing, but a lack of snow cover may translate into water restrictions and more numerous/severe wildfires later this year.
What’s next? A few dribs and drabs of snow next week, but after a chilly weekend temperatures thaw with 30s and a few 40s into early March. Polar-vortex-free.
With Wednesday’s freak stalled snow band, MSP is up to 37.2 inches for the winter season, an inch above average. Enjoy the new snow, and soon.
