“Listen. With faint dry sound. Like steps of passing ghosts. The leaves, frost-crisp’d, break from the trees and fall” wrote poet Adelaide Crapsey in “November Night.” The dark ages are upon us. I miss the warmth, but like many others, I miss seeing the sun even more.
We’ve lost 5 hours, 34 minutes of daylight since June 21. November is the cloudiest month of the year on average in the Twin Cities and much of the Upper Midwest.
Some of us feel melancholy, but experts say there are steps we can take to feel better. Exercise reduces anxiety and depression while improving sleep, according to the CDC. Social connections and even a brief walk outdoors can help to reduce symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Daylight increases again in just 48 days!
I see sunshine into midweek, but models show a clipper with metro rain Saturday, possibly wet snow up north. By early next week a quick spasm of winter arrives; it’ll feel like mid-December.
Enjoy 50s this week. When the sun’s out, sneak outside. It’ll help.
