Douglas: Snow could make Saturday travel tricky

The Twin Cities metro area could see 3-6 inches of light, powdery snow, tapering off early Sunday.

The only thing more heartbreaking than being a Vikings fan is being a Vikings fan with a snowmobile. Especially the last two winters: 29.5 inches of snow. Where are we living, Nashville?

After two consecutive wimpy winters I suspect this one will provide less heartbreak for snow lovers. After the 10th latest “first measurable” snow at MSP, Old Man Winter is making up for lost time.

No travel headaches during daylight hours Friday, but a southern storm tracking from Denver to Chicago will push a shield of snow into southern and central Minnesota on Friday night into Saturday. Iowa may pick up 10-plus inches of snow, with 8 inches in far southern Minnesota and the potential for 3-6 inches in the Twin Cities metro. This will be a light, fluffy, powdery snow, with temperatures in the 20s. Travel Saturday may be tough, especially if you’re driving south. Maybe wait until Sunday when snow tapers off early with clearing and “highs” in the teens.

I see a couple of quick thaws into mid-December, but the pattern is active, snowy and colder than average. A real winter? Probably.
