With so many new visitors in town I’m happy to report a conga-line of fresh, Canadian cold fronts, still reeking of the Arctic Circle! Not record cold, but a few single-digit highs and maybe five to eight subzero nights in the metro (more up north) over the next one to two weeks.

Minnesota is the U.S. Capital of Cold Fronts. A climatological study of the North Shore of Lake Superior published in 2022 tracked “synoptic-scale cold fronts” passing through northeastern Minnesota. The study identified 634 cold fronts over a period of roughly 8.5 years. That averages out to about 74.5 cold fronts per year. Yes, someone took the time to count them all. Cool.

MSP just experienced eight days at or above 32 degrees and three days in the 40s. It’s probably time for a cold correction. I see a cold weekend (single digits) and even colder weather for the last weekend of January. Plenty of numbing air in place for snow. Maybe 1-2 inches Thursday into Friday with another 1-3 inches Sunday.

The metro has picked up 24.6 inches this winter. More is on the way. Don’t give up.
