Open mouth, insert foot. Or in my case, an entire leg. Yesterday I stopped in to acclaimed chef David Fhima’s new Sicilian restaurant in Excelsior, Vagabondo. I asked him if they served real gelato. He paused and answered: “Paul, unlike meteorology the science behind making gelato is precise.” Ouch. But he’s not wrong.

Attempting to predict weather is squishy. Which weather model to use and when? Pattern recognition. New AI models coming online. Oof.

Not sure if anyone predicted a 1-in-1000-year flood for Milwaukee the other day with 14 inches of rain. It’s been a record U.S. summer for flash floods, and of course, puffs of wildfire smoke drifting over Minnesota.

Any early shower should fizzle with clearing skies Tuesday and a fresh breeze. A sunny, quiet Wednesday gives way to a renewed thunder risk Thursday, with an atmosphere ripe for more storms this weekend as a heat dome approaches once again. We may be near 90 again by Friday, but 70s for highs return next week. Dog days? I don’t see any just yet.
