Douglas: One of the coldest weekends of winter?

Saturday’s highs temps will stay below zero across most of Minnesota. Factor in the wind and it will feel like 20 below to 30 below both Saturday and Sunday.

I haven’t entirely thought this through, but my short-term goal is to sleep through the weekend and wake up to a thaw on Tuesday. My planning skills aren’t great, but if I keep my phone turned off this could work. Although Saturday may leave you questioning your life choices, any Siberian hangover won’t last long.

Friday’s candy-coating of frosty fluff may ice up a few more roads, but it will be too cold to snow (much) this weekend with storms sailing south of Minnesota. The sun should be out this weekend, but it won’t help much. Saturday’s “highs” will stay below zero across most of Minnesota. Factor in the wind and it will feel like 20 below to 30 below both Saturday and Sunday. For at least one frigid weekend we get our winter boasting rights back.

I see a few days of highs in the 30s next week, maybe more snow again next Thursday. Yes, some melting is inevitable, but with 10 inches on the ground (at MSP) there will be a white Christmas.

Because January came early this winter, so will the January thaw — about three to four weeks ahead of schedule.
