Douglas: February is looking more like March

A slushy coating of snow on Thursday could break things up.

Every year Minnesotans participate in their own, reluctant version of the Winter Olympics. Competitive windshield scraping. The majesty of synchronized snowblowing. Ice skating to the mailbox. My favorite: the extreme layering marathon — a timed event to see how many minutes it takes to use the bathroom while wearing long underwear, jeans, snow pants, and a parka. We are all gold medalists.

We had that 20-day subfreezing stretch in late January (not at all unusual, statistically) and now the weather pendulum is swinging back in the opposite direction with 30s this week and 40s by the weekend, spilling into the first half of next week. I fear much of the snow in your yard may be gone by next week at this time. At least looking out 10 days, the maps look more like March than February.

“All vaguely interesting, Paul, but will it snow?” Not much. Maybe a slushy coating on Thursday, possibly another 1 to 2 inches late next week. Scrounging for snow.

A slow-motion meltdown means we can participate in the coveted car wash scramble!
