“Hello. I’m Paul, your weather-server. You have only two choices today, baked drought or chunky flood soup. I can throw in a side dish of tater-tot-size hail if that interests you.”
Southern Minnesota is recovering from one to three months’ worth of rain since Saturday. Doppler radar estimates show over 12 inches of rain near Waseca. Flooding is more typical in June but fairly unusual in mid-August. It’s been a record year for flash floods across the U.S., and Minnesota wasn’t spared.
Our all-or-nothing weather pattern now swings in the opposite direction. The next couple of weeks will be mainly dry and relatively comfortable with highs in the 70s much of next week. Up north, lows will dip into the 40s. You may even need a sweatshirt. Great news for throngs heading to the Minnesota State Fair. No oppressive heat or humidity this year, for a change.
Days are still long, lake water lukewarm, loons still yodeling away. Here comes summer without monsoon rains, oppressive heat and gasp-worthy humidity. Feel free to leave a big tip.
