Douglas: Frequent clippers and numbing cold fronts

A total of 4 to 8 inches of snow may fall in the next week.

Wait, you’re telling me this may be a good winter for skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing, with enough snow to make anyone with a plow on the front of their 4x4 happy? Yes.

A faint La Niña with weak jet-stream winds over the North Pole will conspire to keep winds blowing out of Canada most of December, with few opportunities for milder, Pacific air to reach Minnesota.

Every winter brings multiple episodes of snow and cold. Snow lovers get very excited, only to see their hopes dashed due to frequent thaws. It snows, but it’s not “usable snow.” It doesn’t stick around for long. We may hit 32 degrees once or twice in the next two weeks, but not long enough to melt the growing pile of powder in your yard.

A quick inch is possible Friday, plus another clipper capable of another inch Saturday, but most of the snow should stay south of the metro area. More clippers conspire to drop snow next week. Between now and next Friday as much as 4 to 8 inches may fall from a collection of clippers.

At this rate I envision a very white Christmas.
