But a thaw is likely next week, with highs in the 30s.

Can you feel any colder than numb? Not sure. And how cold is TOO COLD to keep a Minnesotan indoors? “If you’re dressed properly — warm boots, multiple layers and no exposed skin — you’re just fine,” I hear over and over again, and I don’t disagree. But if you do get stuck, or slide off the road, or run out of gas with a windchill of minus 30 and kids that aren’t properly dressed, you’re definitely at risk.

Such will be the case this weekend, probably one of the two or three coldest outbreaks of the winter. It’s always a good idea to have a winter survival kit in your trunk: blankets, a shovel, flares, flashlight, first-aid kit, jumper cables and snacks. Maybe EXTRA snacks.

A thaw is likely next week. Temperatures in the 30s (above zero) will feel like sweet relief. No big snowfalls into Saturday, just a quick inch of powder Thursday ahead of the Mother Lode of Siberian air.

For the first time since Jan. 20, when the MSP “high” was minus 6, Saturday may bring daylong subzero temperatures statewide, with a chill factor of 25 to 40 below.

Be careful out there.
