Douglas: An early taste of autumn is on the way

But this doesn’t mean winter is coming early, with 80s back by midmonth.

What did I do with that favorite sweatshirt? Get ready for some really fine sleeping weather into the weekend as Canada sneezes unusually cool air south of the border. No records, no snow, just a touch of autumnal windchill by Thursday and Friday.

This is hardly shocking news. The sun is as high in the sky today as it was on April 8. We lose 80 to 90 minutes of daylight this month.

Fall is trending milder, but every now and then we get a prematurely chilly shot across the bow. It does NOT mean winter is coming early. It does NOT mean a pioneer winter is imminent. It means our atmosphere is random and chaotic. Payback for a warmer, wetter summer?

We had an unusually windy spring, and you’ll notice a howling wind in coming days, gusting to 30 mph on Wednesday and again Friday. Showery rain is likely today and again late Thursday — another soggy slap from an Alberta clipper on Saturday. And, yes, it’s too early to be babbling about Alberta clippers.

But September can bring huge extremes. I still see 80s by midmonth. Hang on!
