Douglas: A hard-earned February thaw next week

Until then, single-digit highs and at least three subzero nights into Friday.

Like most Minnesotans I needed a mental health break, so I watched tornado and hurricane videos with my oldest grandson. He wants to be a meteorologist and I’m trying to support him but I’m feeling paranoid.

Data shows that the most accurate, reliable forecasts are a mix of man and machine. Automate everything and the forecast isn’t as good. Which models to trust and when? Right now people tell better stories, adding perspective and context. I hope insanely smart AI large language models (LLMs) don’t change that equation, but some days I wonder. Always have a Plan B, C and D.

The cold is getting old but I do see some relief. Single-digit highs and at least three subzero nights into Friday, then a rerun of Pacific air next week. Highs in the 30s, even a shot at 40 degrees the latter half of next week? Be still my (frozen) heart.

“All vaguely interesting, but where’s the snow, Paul?” Maybe a coating Sunday, and models hint at a slightly more favorable pattern for snow the second week of February.

Get out and play in the snow this weekend.
