Optimist. Noun. “Person who tends to be hopeful and confident about the future.” See “Minnesotan with swimming pool” or “Minnesotan with convertible/motorcycle.” Also: “Newcomer with one light jacket in the hall closet.”

Most days I’m optimistic. Bad times and bad weather don’t last forever. Unless you live in Florida.

Since 1850 40% of all U.S. hurricanes have hit Florida (the most hurricane-prone state in the nation). Sticking out into the Gulf, it’s asking for trouble. The European model brings a hurricane into Florida around Aug. 20. That’s still far off, and the track will change over time. It may threaten the Carolinas or fizzle. Confidence levels are very low. But I would advise friends/family in the southeast U.S. to pay attention.

A heat advisory is posted for Friday, enough juice (moisture) and wind shear for strong to severe thunderstorms by Friday night. The weekend looks great, with hazy sun and mid-80s. Enjoy because tropical 90s may return Aug. 14-19.

Summer isn’t nearly done with us just yet.
