Don't forget promise of new library in north Minneapolis

June 24, 2010 at 11:32PM

I'm glad to hear of the plans for the Brooklyn Park and Excelsior libraries ("Hennepin board eyes two library sites," June 23). Good for those communities! Here in Minneapolis, our community also would be excited to get a new Webber Park library building, which was promised to us by Hennepin County Commissioners Mike Opat and Mark Stenglein at our library's reopening in January 2008 (it had been closed for financial reasons). The County Board approved $15 million for a new library as part of the merger of the city and county library systems. The Webber library is in its 100th year of serving our community, and we are waiting for this promise to be kept. Thanks goodness the merger reopened our library. But please, commissioners, don't forget us. Please find a way to make this work for deserving north Minneapolis library users. MARY MARTINSON, MINNEAPOLIS

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
