Does the Twin Cities have one less sports station?

Clear Channel announces it's giving up 690 AM.

July 20, 2010 at 8:49PM

Just got word that Clear Channel is donating 690AM Minneapolis to the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council. It's unclear to me what the MMTC will do with the station, but I'm in the process of checking.

If it's the end of the all-sports format, it might not matter to many folks. 690AM is only a 500-watt daytimer and it's becoming less and less important since 1500AM went to all sports. Still, I enjoyed listening to Dan Patrick in the mornigns (you can hear a rebroadcast on KFAN in the evenings) and even Jim Rome around noontime.

Clear Channel will now have just six stations in the market.

UPDATE: According to sources, 690 AM will remain sports -oriented for at least a year - and maybe beyond.
