If it's one of the lesser carols -- say, "Jingle Around the Rocking Tree" or some other '50s novelty number we still warble for no apparent reason -- you can mumble a few words until you reach the safety of the chorus. But if you've only heard the famous verses, the latter lines can trip you up.
