Fly-tying for beginners

Afton State Park, 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday

Geared for those with little or no fly-tying experience, the clinic is about the basics. Reservations required; call 651-436-5391. (mndnr.gov)

Spring orienteering

Lake Maria State Park, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

A map and compass event organized by the Minnesota Orienteering Club for beginners and club members. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Bring a compass, if you have one. There will be a small map fee. (763-878-2325, mndnr.gov)

Bird search

Lowry Nature Center, 1-3 p.m. Saturday

Head to Victoria for the Minnesota Young Birders Club's early spring hike. Search for winter birds and newly arrived migrants. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Call 763-559-6700 and reference number 211305-00. This program is for ages 13-18.

Syrup programs

Wild River State Park, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday or Sunday

• Learn the basics of maple syruping. Bring a lunch. Limit 35 participants per day. Registration required; call 651-583-2125, ext. 227. (mndnr.gov)

Eastman Nature Center, 1-4 p.m. Sunday

• Discover maple syruping history and techniques. Drop in anytime. Free and open to all ages. Children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

French Regional Park, 1-4 p.m. Sunday

• Cost is $6. Open to all ages, and children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Lowry Nature Center, 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday

• Learn the process. Try maple syrup and sugar. Cost is $6. This program is open to all ages, and children 17 years and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Ahead of the hunt

Baker Near-Wilderness Settlement, 6-9 p.m. Monday

Get prepared for the turkey hunting season. Explore turkey biology, management, hunting behavior and equipment, calling techniques and more. Presented by DNR-certified turkey hunting instructors. Cost is $6. The program is for ages 11 and older.

Raptors in the yard

Lowry Nature Center, 2-4 p.m. Sunday

Meet captive raptors and learn about the birds. Children 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. (763-694-7650, threerivers­parks.org)
