Hugo artist Nicholas T. Markell created the winning design in the Department of Natural Resource's 2012 Minnesota Trout and Salmon Stamp contest.

His painting of a rainbow trout with a fishing line in its mouth was chosen out of 17 entries and will be featured on the stamps that the DNR sells to those who fish in designated trout streams and lakes as well as in Lake Superior.

Laurence Huls of Avon, Minn., finished second; Stephen Hamrick of Lakeville was third, and Dale Knaffla of Silver Bay, Minn., finished fourth.

The DNR sells about 95,000 of the $10 stamps annually. Proceeds from sales go to habitat restoration projects, stocking trout and managing Lake Superior.
