Michelle Rae Wilson, a self-described "diva" who fatally shot her ex-boyfriend when he tried to extricate himself from the relationship, was sentenced Thursday in Ramsey County District Court to more than 29 years in prison.

A jury convicted Wilson, 47, on Dec. 16 of second-degree murder in the Jan. 13, 2008 slaying of Carl Jackson, 33. She will have to serve almost 19 1/2 years before she is eligible for supervised release.

Wilson had testified at her trial that Jackson barged into her home on the day he was killed and accused her of not wanting to have a baby with him.

She shot him after she said he tried to force her to have sex, assaulted her and charged at her from behind. She fired six shots.

But during an exchange between them that Jackson had recorded about two weeks earlier, Wilson could be heard saying to him, "Please do not give up on us," before later screaming, "Please, Carl, fix my pain ... Fix my pain! Fix it!"

At least 28 times during the four-minute, 51-second recording, Jackson told Wilson he had to go or wanted to leave -- or implored her to turn off her home security system so he could exit without incident, a police sergeant testified.

At the sentencing hearing, District Judge Joanne Smith also ordered Wilson to pay $6,851 restitution and submit a DNA sample. She was given credit for the 56 days she has spent in custody.
