Dispatch: Beacon lighting to honor Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew

A ceremony commemorating the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the lives losts in the freighter's sinking will take place Nov. 10 on the North Shore at Split Rock Lighthouse.

The freighter sank on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975, in raging wind and waves as high as 25 feet.

The Minnesota Historical Society event is from noon to 6 p.m. The lighthouse, fog signal building and visitor center will be open. The lighthouse will close temporarily at 4:30 p.m. while the names of the Fitzgerald crew members are read. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour. It is suggested visitors bring flashlights to help with visibility after the event. The beacon lighting ceremony has been happening since 1985.

Cost is $9 for adults; $7 for seniors and college students; $6 for ages 6 to 17; and free for ages 5 and younger and Minnesota Historical Society members.
