ORLANDO -- Two Walt Disney World monorail trains collided early Sunday morning, killing an operator.

Walt Disney World spokesman Mike Griffin said the crash happened about 2 a.m. on one of the last runs of the day.

Austin Wuennenberg, 21, a Disney employee driving one of the trains, died at the scene, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. One other employee was transported to a hospital. The second driver's injuries were not serious, Griffin said.

The trains were carrying visitors leaving Epcot. Six park visitors on the train during the crash were evaluated by paramedics at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

The park was operating normally Sunday, except for the closure of the monorail.

The wreck is the first fatal accident in the Walt Disney World monorail system's nearly 38 years, according to CFNews13.com. Disneyland in California has had at least one death on the monorail system, according to park historians.

Walt Disney World officials said they are working with law enforcement officials to find out what happened.

According to a former Disney World monorail driver, the vehicles were outfitted with a safety system called Mapo. The former driver said as soon as the monorail train gets within two checkpoints of another train, it automatically stops.
