'Newsies'

Opens Tuesday: This musical by composer Alan Menken, lyricist Jack Feldman and book-writer Harvey Fierstein is a classic David and Goliath story. The little guys are the ragtag urchins who peddle papers in New York at the turn of the 20th century. The big guys are newspaper barons Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, who do not want to pay the boys a fair wage. Led by one of their own, the boys strike. Throw in some love and ambition, and stir. Disney released a 1992 film around the subject that did not do well at the box office. But the show found a following in the stage musical that bowed in 2011 and transferred to Broadway a year later. (7:30 p.m. Tue.-Thu., 8 p.m. Fri., 2 & 8 p.m. Sat., 1 & 6:30 p.m. next Sun. $39-$154. Orpheum Theatre, 910 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. 1-800-982-2787, hennepintheatretrust.org.)

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
