A western Wisconsin district attorney today will reveal what he has found out about the shooting death of a 72-year-old man by police last month.

Phillip Metzig of Spooner, Wis., was killed Feb. 2 after exchanging gunfire with two Spooner police officers, the Washburn County Sheriff's Office said.

Chippewa County District Attorney Jon M. Theisen, acting as a special prosecutor, will discuss the case this afternoon during a news conference in Shell Lake.

According to the Sheriff's Office:

The officers were responding to a report of an older man peering into vehicles in an apartment complex parking lot.

One of the officers went up to the man sitting in a gray minivan. The man got out and pointed a rifle at the officer. Shots were exchanged, leaving Metzig dead. He lived in a nearby apartment.
