It's not uncommon to hear local musicians on the local radio dial anymore, but it is still a big deal when they land on a national radio program. Dessa makes that leap this weekend with a recorded appearance on "Sound Opinions," the syndicated music-nerd program hosted by veteran Chicago music critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis. The show airs here Sunday at 8 p.m. on 89.3 the Current (right after David Campbell's "The Local Show").

Kot was one of the more prominent writers to tout Dessa's "A Badly Broken Code" album, naming it one of the best of 2010 in the Chicago Tribune. They taped this session in November on with her band during their "Castor, the Twin" tour (she's currently on the road with Doomtree instead). By coincidence -- and contrast -- "Sound Opinions" will also focus on the new Sleigh Bells record this week. Nothing like having one of the most overrated female-fronted bands out there with the relatively underrated local star.

Dessa won't be alone repping Minnesota music on NPR outlets this weekend. Saturday is the day Trampled by Turtles will make their debut on "A Prairie Home Companion." The show is broadcasting live from the band's home town of Duluth at 5 p.m. You can hear it in the Twin Cities on KNOW 91.1 FM.
