Desperation shot gets UCLA past Cal • NO. 3 UCLA 81, CALIFORNIA 80: Josh Shipp hit a rainbow jumper from behind the backboard with 1.5 seconds remaining as the Bruins rallied from an 11-point deficit and beat the Golden Bears (15-14, 6-12) in Los Angeles. UCLA (28-3, 16-2 Pac-10) trailed by four points with 31 seconds left, then freshman Kevin Love hit a three-pointer off an inbounds pass from Darren Collison to make it 80-79. The Bruins then stole the ball and got it to Shipp, who was falling out of bounds as he launched the game-winning shot.

NO. 2 MEMPHIS 94, UAB 56: Joey Dorsey had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers (30-1, 16-0 Conference USA) crushed the visiting Blazers.

NO. 5 KANSAS 72, TEXAS A&M 55: Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur both scored 16 points and the visiting Jayhawks (28-3, 13-3) beat the Aggies (22-9, 8-8) to clinch at least a share of their fourth consecutive Big 12 regular-season title. Texas would tie Kansas for the title if it beats Oklahoma State today.

USC 77, NO. 7 STANFORD 64: Freshman O.J. Mayo scored 25 points, Taj Gibson added 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Trojans (20-10, 11-7 Pac-10) handed the visiting Cardinal (24-6, 13-5) their second consecutive loss.

NO. 8 XAVIER 86, RICHMOND 61: B.J. Raymond scored a career-high 22 points, the Musketeers (26-5, 14-4) made a season-high 36 free throws in beating the visiting Spiders (16-13, 9-7).

ALABAMA 78, NO. 16 VANDERBILT 73 (OT): Mykal Riley scored Alabama's first 13 points of overtime, including three three-pointers, and the Crimson Tide (16-15, 5-11 SEC) beat the visiting Commodores (25-6, 10-6).

NO. 19 NOTRE DAME 67, SOUTH FLORIDA 60: Luke Harangody scored 21 points and the Fighting Irish (24-6, 14-4) defeated the Bulls (12-19, 3-15).

NO. 20 DRAKE 75, CREIGHTON 67: Adam Emmenecker had 20 points and 11 assists as the Bulldogs (27-4) defeated the Blue Jays (21-10) in the Missouri Valley Conference semifinals, breaking the school record for victories set by the 1968-69 team that advanced to the Final Four.

SYRACUSE 87, NO. 21 MARQUETTE 72: Donte Greene and Jonny Flynn both scored 21 points and the Orange beat the visiting Golden Eagles.

NO. 23 WASHINGTON STATE 76, WASHINGTON 73 (2 OT): Kyle Weaver scored 20 points and Derrick Low and Taylor Rochestie 16 as the Cougars outlasted the Huskies in Pullman, Wash.

NCAA qualifiers

BIG SOUTH: Michael Jenkins scored 33 points and Winthrop (22-11) beat host North Carolina Asheville (23-9) 66-48, giving the Eagles their eighth NCAA tournament berth in 10 years.

OHIO VALLEY: Todd Babington scored 24 points as Austin Peay (24-10) beat Tennessee State (15-17) 82-64 in Nashville, giving the Governors their first NCAA berth since 2003.

ATLANTIC SUN: Shane Dansby scored 16 points as Belmont beat Jacksonville 79-61 in Nashville to clinch its third consecutive NCAA tourney berth.

• A winter storm grounded the Cincinnati men's basketball team in Ohio, forcing the game at No. 13 Connecticut to be postponed until today.

• Miami (Ohio) basketball coach Charlie Coles will miss the rest of the season for medical reasons and will be replaced by assistant coach Jermaine Henderson.
