Deputy shoots wanted man during arrest in Montrose, sheriff says

A Wright County deputy shot a man on Monday while trying to arrest him on warrants outside a store west of the Twin Cities, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deputies responded around 1 p.m. to the Dollar General at 631 Nelson Blvd. in Montrose to attempt to arrest the man on outstanding arrest warrants, the office said in the release. The town is about 35 miles west of downtown Minneapolis.

The deputies tried to arrest the man as he exited the store, but he refused to comply with the deputies’ commands and brandished a firearm, the Sheriff’s Office said. The deputies deployed “less than lethal measures” on the man, who continued to resist arrest while brandishing a gun, according to the release.

A Wright County deputy then shot the man, the release states. The deputies took the man into custody and provided emergency aid before he was taken away in an ambulance. The incident is now under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

The Sheriff’s Office did not say what the man’s condition was or what his warrants were for. A spokeswoman for the BCA said the bureau will share additional details after completing a preliminary investigation.
